Grokker Synopsis

Stargate: Atlantis is (as the name might suggest) a spin-off from the series Stargate: SG-1. Basically, Earth is connected to lots of other planets via wormholes, which can be accessed by a big circle thing called the Stargate. The Stargate network was built by the Ancients (an ancient (unsurprisingly) race of hi-tech aliens with lots of hinky ethical ideas), who also built lots of other things including the FLYING SPACE CITY of Atlantis (seen in various clips here as a sort of snowflake-shaped floating thing, and also emerging from the water where it was hidden after the Ancients left). At the start of the series, SG-1 has helped discover the location of the lost city; an expedition is sent to the Pegasus Galaxy to explore it, only to discover and accidentally wake the Wraith (the pale long-haired vampire-y things), the enemy who originally drove the Ancients out of Atlantis and back to Earth. The initial expedition go on the basis that it's likely to be a one-way trip, and this (along with the battle with the Wraith) drives most of the first season; in later seasons, contact is reestablished, though the city is still fairly isolated. They are, to put it politely, Not Terribly Smart *g*, but they're very pretty, and many of them are geeks.

Main characters: the main viewpoint character is probably Lt. Col. John Sheppard (soldier guy, sticky-up dark hair, the one doing most of the kissing, wears a lot of black and is often seen shooting things), most often slashed with Dr Rodney McKay (scientist guy, receding brown-ish hair, blue shirts, always doing talky-face). Their boss is Dr Elizabeth Weir (bosslady, dark hair, red shirt, frequent expression of disapproval at John and Rodney's antics), and they are on a team with Teyla Emmagen (leader of Pegasus native group, brown hair, fighting sticks, tendency to be more awesome than anyone in her vicinity) and Ronon Dex (Pegasus native, soldier, GIANT FIGHTING DUDE with dreadlocks) (replaced Lt Ford, the cheerful young Marine guy you see in a couple of clips, after he went crazy and ran away).

Enemies: the Wraith, of course. They suck the life out of people (literally!); several of the very old-looking people in the clips are Wraith victims. They're also the ones in most of the spaceships you see in the clips, and the people-sucking beams are used by their little darts; they scoop people up, then dump them into cells on their big ships for later consumption. The guys in Nazi-style uniforms are the Genii, recurring villains, general troublemakers, and eventual allies - at least one faction of them. There are also the Replicators, who tend to wear a lot of robes and stick their hands into people's heads, etc.

NB: There is SIGNIFICANTLY LESS KISSING on the show than you might assume from these vids *g*. "Grace Kelly", in particular, manages to include virtually every on-screen kiss, even if several of them involve people not in their right minds for various reasons. There are, however, lots of explosions and people shooting things and whatnot, so that's pretty accurate.

Stranger Synopses

Stranger 1

All I knew about this fandom was:

There are two shows called Stargate on the Sci-Fi Channel. I don't know which is which, but one of them has John and Aeryn from Farscape on it, and the other one has two guys who are in love with each other, one of whom is chubby and named McKay. I've forgotten the other dude's name, but I'm 90% sure it isn't McKay. And they're in space. One day Sci-Fi was like, "Having two shows called Stargate is confusing. Our viewers don't have time to look after a colon!" And so they cancelled one of them. Even they're not sure which one. I think they brought in a blind guy to randomly hurl large knives all around the studio, and they cancelled the Stargate of whichever cast member he hit first.

Here's what this fandom is really about:

Grace Kelly -- Not McKay is the most handsome guy in space and captain of the Stargate professional intergalactic golf team. (Go fightin' Atlantises!) McKay is his personal computer tech guy. He harbors a secret crush on him from afar, metaphorically speaking, since "afar" is more literally "following him around like a puppy making adorable faces." I like McKay already, but girlfriend needs to get some confidence! Luckily a Hot Blonde Fairy Godmother in a pink tracksuit arrives to set him straight (also metaphorically) and he gets up the courage to give Not McKay a big kiss and confess his feelings. Then he goes, "By the way, what's your name? 'Cause it's not mine." The other dude just smiles sexily, and because he is sexy and on the Sci-Fi Channel, I'm just gonna call him Anders. But somewhere in between their magical golf adventures -- because McKay also has magic powers like turning invisible and being Canadian, I'm not sure if I mentioned that -- Anders changes. He starts screwing all the cheerleaders and smacking McKay around. McKay just takes it with his little puppy face. THIS SHOW IS A TRAGIC STORY OF DOMESTIC ABUSE.

Right Here Right Now -- This video shows the backstory of how Anders became such a sexy jerk. He was involved in a secret government program to learn how to jump into shiny things and hone his womanizing skills. After many grueling weeks of shiny-thing-jumping and sex, they all went on a company camping trip. That's where he met McKay. RUN, McKAY, RUN! Meanwhile Marilyn Manson and the cast of Final Fantasy showed up and I guess they're at war or something, and Anders got kidnapped. Times were hard. He presumably decided to take up golf around that time.

Rumble -- McKay and Anders move to the Big City. The evil guys are still vaporizing people, but Anders doesn't care because he has the prettiest apartment ever, and McKay doesn't care 'cause he has Anders. Plus the big intergalactic golf match is coming! The team mobilizes and engages in manly pre-game rituals with guns. Eventually McKay has had enough of his man's lies. He considers building an elaborate tech bomb to kill Anders. But when he misses, they look into each other's eyes and fall back in love. Anders sees the error of his ways and is finally ready to commit. He's like "lemme just run upstairs and get these clothes off, YAY!" and McKay is like "YAY!" But then Anders gets shot and dies. Just when things were looking up. McKay is free, but at what price, y'all? At what price??

Stranger 2

All I knew about this fandom was:

That it existed, really. I know there's a guy with a circle on his head. I think. I've seen the movie, but I think the only thing they have in common is the Stargate.

Here's what this fandom is really about:

Vampires. Stargate Atlantis is about the ongoing fight against the undead. Atlantis has risen, possibly on a different planet, and it's infested with very old vampires that can phase. Their main weapons seem to be lasers, a giant death ray of some sort, and an aging ray. Or the aging ray is the Scientists, and they use it to infiltrate the vampires. I'm not sure. It's up to Short Haired Main Guy and Gay Canadian Techie to evacuate the civilians, while avoiding said death ray, with their of fluctuating bevvy of beautiful women...all of which Short Haired Main Guys seems to kiss, shag, or date. They travel back and forth from this world to the spaceship they live on via the Stargate, which doesn't seem to be limited to the stone circle, as in the movie, but can pop up randomly, appearing once in a closet.

Gay Canadian Techie (who is in love with Short Haired Main Guy) and Short Haired Main Guy are part of the 'Scientists' who are working with the military, but don't seem very happy about it. The Scientists pilfer technology from the alien worlds to adapt for human use, but not always in the way they'd like.

Stranger 3

All I knew about this fandom was:

It was a spinoff of an earlier science-fiction series (that I never got around to watching, either).

Here's what this fandom is really about:

Y'all, listen up, to these words o' prophesy.... Sometime in the not-too-distant future, the great navies of Canada and the United States of the Planet Earth shall have jointly discovered a niftier way of transporting sailors to and from their shore leaves besides boring, bobbing surface ships. Instead, they shall use an Underwater Vortex in which to permit them to sally to and fro. By this time, the current phrase that is the way too silly "don't-ask-don't-tell" shall have been utterly banished, as openly gay sailors shall cavort freely and dance with much abandoned happiness in The City That Generally Stays Above The Underwater Vortex. To enforce the sailors' curfews, however, heavy artillery shall at times be involved, as well as vast amounts of mechanical and computeous wondery. And, sometimes, in a surprise maneuver, meant to keep the sailors well on their twinkle toes, The City itself shall sink beneath the surface to dance with the Underwater Vortex, the result of which shall be unusually moist en masse mambos of much amazement. So sayeth this seer.

Stranger 4

All I knew about this fandom was:

There is a geeky scientist named Rodney who is slashed with someone who may or may not be named McKay. I think they're on a space station, possibly. It's a spinoff of SG-1 somehow.

Here's what this fandom is really about:

Okay, so. Thousands of years ago, a spired crystal-type island city of Atlantis existed. Yes, that Atlantis. And eventually, as the story goes, it sank into the ocean. However, as the story doesn't usually go, Atlantis is actually an alien spaceship. So the aliens, for whatever reason, decide to leave Earth and take off in the snowflake-shaped Atlantis and set off for greener pastures.

And all is well, until around the present day, when they are struck by the attack of the Evil Old Ladies. Evil Old Ladies attack Atlantis, and devastate it. While there, they learn about the planet Earth, and head there to destroy it as well. There's nothing an Evil Old Lady likes better than destroying planets, you see. They possess people, sing evilly, and fight with sticks despite being powerful world-destroying alien beings. Their leader looks like a cross between Galadriel and Voldemort.

So the most intense, dark-haired and ruggedly handsome Atlantean manages to escape the clutches of the Evil Old Ladies and fly to Earth to give the people there a warning about what is to come.

He crashes into the ocean, however, and is discovered by Tough US Army Lady, who is a member of a secret task force studying interdimensional travel portal thingies that are showing up around the world in various places like the woods, the desert, the arctic, and under the sea. She understands Alien's warning, and takes him to one of the secret Stargate bases.

There, Alien meets the other members of Tough's team: a Canadian scientist who will henceforth be known as Nerdy Dude, and two cool fighting people who appear not to need military rank because they are just that awesome. Cool Fighting Guy and Cool Fighting Chick are from another dimension that has also been ravaged by the Evil Old Ladies. They teach members of the SGA team how to stickfight like an Evil Old Lady as well.

Alien broods and angsts a lot in here because he is the last surviving Atlantean and can't ever go home, but he still finds enough time to get a lot of making out done. Mostly in the other dimensions they visit through the dimensional gates, but he also makes out with Tough, CFC and Nerdy Dude. This one makeout session with Nerdy Dude has sustained slashers involved with this show for many years.

Nerdy Dude then hilariously takes it upon himself to teach Alien how to fit in on Earth. This involves an introduction to popular music with full singing and dancing routines, and learning how to play golf. In return, Alien gives Nerdy Dude this glowy green thing that makes it so people can't punch him.

Eventually, in season 2, the Evil Old Ladies arrive on Earth, and all hell breaks loose. Soldiers are getting sucked into the ceiling vents at the SGA bases, where they are captured and locked away by Evil Old Ladies. People also get sucked up off the ground by columns of evil water that suck people away in much the same way. When they're captured, Evil Old Ladies taunt them in their cages, then Girl Voldemort appears and sings evilly until they have passed out from the noise. Once this happens, the Evil Old Ladies do a mind meld with the person and possess them. Then they stick their hand inside the person's head and make them forget that the whole experience has ever occurred.
This eventually also happens to Tough, which is bad, since she's the leader of this whole expedition. Many mishaps occur because Tough is unknowingly harboring an Evil Old Lady who is sabotaging them. Others are soon captured and turned as well. During this time, there is also a lot of actual fighting, with lots of explosions. Everyone, even Nerdy Dude, is in on the crazy big guns action.

In the third season, they figure out how to defeat the Evil Old Ladies once and for all. This involves a Very Special Episode where Nerdy Dude learns about his value to the rest of the crew. Nerdy Dude ascends to some higher plane of existence where everything exists in metaphor, and destroys Girl Voldemort once and for all in a dramatic sequence that involves throwing a suitcase into another galaxy.

After this, the rest of the show has been about the SGA team going to different Evil Old Lady-ravaged dimensions and helping the people there by fighting off any last vestiges of Evil Old Ladies and helping the people to rebuild, or move to a new world. A lot of the making out occurs from this point on. The goal now is eventually to save and heal the home planet of the two Cool Fighting People from the other dimension. The fourth season is still in progress.

Stranger 5

All I knew about this fandom was:

That it's a spinoff of Stargate: SG-1. And that Ronon is NOT a barista.

Here's what this fandom is really about:

So we have this ship. It takes off from under the sea and flies through a Stargate.
The Stargate took the ship people to a very pretty island. But they apparently don't like their island very much. Possibly due to the creepy white haired baddies that teleport people away to scary places. ANd then they strap them to dentist chairs and presumably give them painful root canals. They also like to skip fighters on the surface of the water and count the number of jumps. We also havve a third group of people that obviously aren't part of the Stargate hopping spaceship group, because they bring a swords to a gunfight. The Stargatey people are pulling out every trick they have. Like marching together dramatically! And blowing things up!

The leader of the baddies likes use captives as an audience for her intense operatic arias. She wants the use of the Stargate as a sewer, because she's from a planet with a severe sewage problem.

There's also a lot of making out. So much making out. The first video made me think that the swordfighting and opera singing were the point, but the other two make it pretty obvious that it's actually about the so much making out.

Specifically, it's about the torrid love affair between Tough and Cuddles. Tough isn't sure he really is gay and keep rebuffing Cuddles's advances. Tough isn't a very charming guy. Since Cuddles is a genius and in love with TOugh,he asking Pink Lady(I think I'm going to call her Grace Kelly :p) for advice. Grace Kelly does her best to make Cuddles the prettiest darn Stargatey guy that ever wore a uniform. Nothing seems to work though, no matter how many times he asks Grace Kelly for advice, Cuddles just keeps getting turned down. So he decides maybe he's better off becoming a better fighter to impress Tough. Hechooses to shoot things and wave at Tough, and it works! Tough grabs him in a suitably manly fashion and they're off! There's kissing! And meeting excitedly in the hangar! And strolling through forests. Strolling is very important.
